DONIZETTI GAETANO: (1797-1848) - DONIZETTI GAETANO: (1797-1848) Italian composer. A.L.S., Donizetti , one page, 8vo, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (c.1844), to Monsieur Lombardon, in French. Donizetti writes a charming letter of introduction for a young musician, 'Voila une harpiste fameuse a 11 ans. Elle donnera un concert a Marseille a vous donc!' (Translation: 'Here is a famous harpist at 11 years old. She will give a concert in Marseille to you' ) and continues to add 'Remuez-vous, presentez-la a notre brave Pepin, a Fontana.....et soyez tous la le jour de la fete. Vous ferez le plus grand plaisir a votre affectionne…..' (Translation: 'Get moving, introduce her to our brave Pepin, to Fontana….and all be there on the day of the party. You will give the greatest pleasure to your affectionate….' ). With integral address leaf (some light staining). VG Donizetti's letter of introduction was most probably written for the young harpist Therese Roaldes who gave a concert tour in the south of France in 1844. The letter also makes reference to the conductor and music publisher Charles J. Pepin (1795-1864) and the Italian composer Uranio Fontana (1815-1881) who claimed to have been a pupil of Donizetti and who, in 1853, presented a revised version of the composer's opera Otto mesi in due ore at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris.
