A very good and interesting content A.L.S., ` G.Puccini ´, one page (folding stationery letter), 4to, Torre del Lago, Toscana, 3rd July 1917, to Carlo Clauselt, in Italian. Puccini writes to Casa Ricordi, his musical editors, asking his correspondent to forward his message to the head of the Company Tito Ricordi, and refers very interestingly to his opera Suor Angelica (1918) which he is composing at the time of the present letter, stating in part ` Io ti prego dire a Tito che l´Angelica prosegue verso il termine contano perché tutto il talismano sta nel mistico finale e che questo andando male fa sembrar maligno il resto.´ (Translation: ” I beg you to tell Tito that Angelica continues towards the end because the whole talisman lies in the mystical ending and that this, if it goes badly, makes the rest seem evil.”) Further Puccini states in part ` Ora il sacro e triste arrivo mi da... patimenti quasi quasi nella notte sento gli occhi andarsi spenti ma ripiglio alla mattina colla solita fiducia e alla sera frescolina la pupilla mi ribrucia. Si per ora son consteno del finale lejiato, dillo a Tito che l´aspetto quando il mio respiro andrá soddisfatto. ..´ (Translation: ” Now the sacred and sad arrival gives me sufferings, I almost feel my eyes going dull during the night, but in the morning I start again with the usual confidence and in the cool evening my pupils burn again. Yes, for now I'm satisfied with the ending, tell Tito that I'll wait for him when my breath is satisfied...”) Addressed to the verso in Puccini´s hand, also bearing stamp and postmarks. Two clean tears to the fold not affecting the text or signature. With some repair to the verso. G Casa Ricordi was a Music publishing company, founded in Milan in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi (1785-1853). Ricordi published the work of the major 19th-century Italian composers such as Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and, later in the century, Puccini. Giovanni was succeeded in 1853 by his son Tito (1811–1888), and Tito by his son Giulio (1840–1912) who had a very close relationship with Giuseppe Verdi, and who took over the Company from 1888 until his death in 1912. Finally, Giulio's son, also named Tito, (1865–1933) replaced his father until 1919. Tito II has been described as someone who lacked both charm and judgement. He and Puccini disliked each other. The result being that Puccini published one of his operas by a rival company. Upon Tito's retirement in 1919, management passed outside the family, although, with the company's control over the work of Verdi and Puccini, it retained its pre-eminence. Suor Angelica ” Sister Angelica ” is an opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini. It is the second opera of the trio of operas known as Il Trittico ” The Triptych ”. It received its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera of New York on December 14th 1918.
