CUI CESAR: (1835-1918) - CUI CESAR: (1835-1918) Russian composer. A fine signed and inscribed hardback bound copy of the score to Le Flibustier , First edition for piano and vocals, published by Heugel, Paris, 1893. Signed by Cui to the preliminary blank and incorporating an A.M.Q.S. of two bars, with lyrics ( 'Pardonne-moi, frere, je t'en supplie' ) as sung by Pierre, a former flibustier, at the finale. Further inscribed by Cui to Emile-Alexandre Taskin ( 'A Taskin, souvenir affectueux et reconnaissant' ) who created the role of Pierre. Also signed by Jean Richepin (1849-1926) French poet, novelist and dramatist who wrote the libretto for Le Flibustier . Signed with his name alone in dark fountain pen ink immediately beneath Cui's signature. Attractively bound in half red morocco with marbled boards and endpapers, and with gilt stamped title and decoration to the spine. Some light, minor foxing throughout, only very slightly affecting the signed page. About VG Le Flibustier is a comedie lyrique in three acts which was composed by Cui in 1888-89. The opera is based on Jean Richepin's play of the same name and it premiered at the Opera-Comique in Paris on 22 nd February 1894, playing for just four performances. Emile-Alexandre Taskin (1853-1897) French baritone who frequently performed at the Opera-Comique in Paris and created the role of Lescaut in Jules Massenet's opera Manon in 1884.
