ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) - ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French Writer and Philosopher. A very interesting autograph manuscript, two pages, 4to, n.p., [Paris], n.d. (c.1745), in French. The manuscript, in Rousseau's hand, is part of his unpublished work relating to the history of women and laws which he prepared between 1745 and 1751 for his benefactress Louise Marie Madeleine Dupin, born Fontaine. On this occasion, this manuscript do not seem to be a copied text but more a manuscript where Rousseau adds his own style because he used to write his text in the right part of the page, and the left side was reserved for additional notes relating to the provenance of the information, which on this occasion do not figure, leaving the left side blank. Rousseau refers to the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, stating in part `... elle épousa depuis un Prince de la plus grande réputation qu´il y eut en Orient.... Ptolomée fit tuer la Reine, sa fille et les plus riches du Pays, s´empara de leurs biens et mourut possesseur de l´Egypte peu de temps après cette horrible action...Sa principale volonté était que son fils épousa sa soeur, l´ainée des filles qui lui restaient, celle-ci fut la Belle Cleopatre, qui après la mort de son mari obtint de César la restitution de son Royaume qu´un autre de ses frères avait usurpé. Après la mort de cette dernière Cléopatre, l´Egypte ne fut plus qu´une province de la dépendance de l´Empire Romain´ (Translation: ”..... she married a Prince of the greatest reputation in the East....
