CATHERINE II THE GREAT: (1729-1796) - CATHERINE II THE GREAT: (1729-1796) Empress of Russia 1762-96, Catherine the Great. A very fine L.S., ` Ekaterina - Grand Duchess ´, in Cyrillic, a clean and attractive signature, folio, Saint Petersburg, 10th October 1758, to the ”Most honourable King and Prince-Elector of Prussia”, in Cyrillic. A very early letter signed by Catherine the Great as Grand Duchess, addressed to the King of Prussia Frederick the Great. Both sender and receiver of the present letter being King and Empress called ”The Great” and both being the Second, Catherine II The Great and Frederick II The Great. Catherine II sends her respectful mourning message, stating ` With deepest regret, I learned, through Your Royal Majesty's letter of the thirteenth of June of this year, of the passing of your brother, His Serene Highness Prince August Wilhelm of Prussia. I mourn for Your Royal Majesty's grievous loss and truly share in your sorrow. May such sorrowful occurrences henceforth be kept far from you...´ Few small stains, none affecting the signature, otherwise VG Frederick II (1712-1786) King of Prussia 1740-86, known as Frederick the Great. Prince Augustus William of Prussia (1722-1758) Son of King Frederick William I of Prussia and a younger brother of Frederick the Great. Augustus was the second surviving son of Frederick William I and Sophia Dorothea. When his brother Frederick became King in 1740, Augustus became heir presumptive and moved into Fredrick's former residence, the Crown Prince´s Palace in Berlin. Augustus served his brother as General in the War of the Austrian Succession. Prince Augustus William of Prussia died on 12th June 1758.
