TILLICH PAUL: (1886-1965) - TILLICH PAUL: (1886-1965) German-born American Christian existentialist philosopher, religious socialist, and Lutheran theologian who was one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century. T.L.S., Paul , one page, 4to, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 21st November 1956, to Professor John E. Smith at the Department of Philosophy, Yale University, on the printed stationery of Harvard Divinity School. Tillich expresses his distress and not having been able to attend a reading of Smith´s paper at the Philosophy Club ( ´I trust they didn´t kill you too thoroughly (as they ususally did with me).´ ), further adding that he would like to look at Smith´s paper, although asking for a deadline and suggesting that it might be possible for him to do it January, ´But if this is too late, I can only say I will try to do my best before that time. As you probably know, I have to give one of the main papers in Philadelphia to the American Philosophical Association. I hope you will be there and help me´ .
