[CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) - [CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. T.L.S., Laura Harlan , by Grace Coolidge´s secretary (who had previously worked for Warren G. Harding), one page, 8vo, Washington, 10th May [actually July] 1924, to Howard Carter, on the printed stationery of The White House. Harlan informs Carter that ´Mrs. Coolidge wishes me to exptress her disappointment in not having the pleasure of hearing you lecture last night´ and continues ´The President and Mrs. Coolidge had anticipated with keen interest your account of the wonderful discoveries made during your excavations in Egypt, but felt they must forego the opportunity of hearing you at this time because of the great sorrow that had come so suddenly to a member of their official family´ . Annotated in pencil by Carter at the head of the page, Whitehouse (sic). With blank integral leaf. About EX Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) American politician who served as President of the United States 1923-29. Grace Coolidge (1879-1957) First Lady of the United States 1923-29, the wife of Calvin Coolidge. Calvin Coolidge Jr. (1908-1924) was the younger son of Calvin and Grace Coolidge who tragically died on 7th July 1924 at the age of 16 after contracting sepsis. His death in July 1924 would appear to mean that the present letter was incorrectly dated as May 1924.
