MATA HARI: (1876-1917) - MATA HARI: (1876-1917) Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. Dutch exotic dancer, courtesan and spy, executed by a firing squad in France during World War I. An exceptionally fine vintage signed 4 x 8.25 cabinet photograph, the albumen print by F. O. Lundt of Berlin depicting the attractive, yet demure Mata Hari standing in a full-length pose wearing a dark dress and hat, and with her hands warmly placed in a muff as she poses in a faux winter storm against a painted backdrop of snow covered trees, and with snowflakes swirling around her (an ingenious effect caused by doctoring the glass negative). Signed ( ´Mata Hari´ ) with her stage name in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer´s mount and further signed with her married name, and inscribed in French, to the verso, ´Grety McLeod, avec ses sentiments tres sympathiques à Mr. Weinberg´ , also adding the place and date, Vienna, December 1906, in her hand. With the photographer´s imprint to the lower mount and verso. An exquiste and rare signed portrait. About EX
