LEWES GEORGE HENRY: (1817-1878) - LEWES GEORGE HENRY: (1817-1878) English philosopher and critic of literature and theatre, best known today for having openly lived with Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880) who wrote under the nom-de-plume George Eliot. The personal printed small oblong 12mo Visiting Card of Lewes, unsigned, featuring his printed name ( ´G. H. Lewes´ ) to the centre, and address at The Priory, North Bank (London) to the lower left corner, with three lines of text in his hand, in pencil. About VG Lewes and Eliot lived together at The Priory in St. John´s Wood from 1863, and it was their main residence until Lewes's death in November 1878. The house was well known as the location for their famous Sunday afternoon ”at homes” which were attended by many prominent literary figures and intellectuals of the time.
