RAVEL MAURICE: (1875-1937) ”I played a Sonatina in Marseille... terribly” - RAVEL MAURICE: (1875-1937) French composer, pianist and conductor. A very fine and sharp A.L.S., Maurice Ravel , attractively signed, written to first and last page of his small 4to bifolium personal monogrammed correspondence letter, Le Belvédère, Montfort-l'Amaury, 23rd March 1922, in French. Ravel first refers to his travel plan to London, stating in part ' J´ai du trahir le secret, il y a une dizaine de jours environ: EdwinEvans m´ayant proposé de me faire venir à Londres, il a bien fallu lui dire que vous vous occupiez de m´y organiser des concerts, et je lui ai conseillé de vous voir à ce sujet. Peut-être l´avez-vous déjà rencontré.´ (Translation: ” I must have let the cat out of the bag, about ten days ago: Edwin Evans offered to bring me to London, so I had to tell him that you were arranging concerts for me there, and I advised him to see you about it. Perhaps you've already met him”) Further, Ravel comments his terrible performance and concludes with few amusing creative words referring to Stravinsky, saying ` J´ai joué une Sonatine l´autre jour à Marseille, d´une façon infâme, d´ailleurs. Il est vrai que je n´avais pas joué à mon piano depuis plus d´un mois. Entendu pour la condition ”stravinskyales”, mieux encore ”moïsewitchisten” si possible.´ (Translation ” I played a Sonatina the other day in Marseille, quite terribly, I might add. It's true I hadn't played my piano for over a month. Understood for the ”Stravinskyales” condition, or better yet, ”Moïsewitchisten” if possible.”).
