SCHUMANN CLARA: (1819-1896) - SCHUMANN CLARA: (1819-1896) German Musician and Composer, one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era. Wife of Robert Schumann. An excellent and lengthy A.L.S., ` Clara Schumann ´, four pages, small 4to bifolium, with two paragraphs written upside down to the inside pages, Berchtesgaden, 27th August 1886, annotated in another hand in pencil that the letter is addressed to Hildebrand, in Florence, in German. Clara Schumann considers seriously travelling to Florence but is concerned about the resulting pain on her back and the spread of cholera, stating in part ` Lieber, verehrter Freund, wie gerne ich Ihnen die Sache auch erleichterte u.nach Florenz käme, so habe ich doch aus zweierlei Ursachen nicht den Muth. I would come to Florence and make things easier for you, although for two reasons I do not have the courage. Firstly, travelling is very harmful to my bad back; I would certainly need 4–5 days to reach Florence, as I would have to rest between journeys, so I would likely arrive in Florence exhausted; furthermore, the thought of a possible quarantine in some godforsaken place would terrify me the whole time, because we are constantly listening about the spread of cholera. I cannot tell you how hard it will be for me to do without Florence, but I feel I cannot do so without putting you at risk. I would have liked to explain this to you more clearly in person.”) Clara Schumann´ (Translation: ” Artistically, I am always... but in life I am sluggish now, because my foolish imagination is always playing tricks on me, and my body is no longer supple enough to fight it off. So, I am ready for Baden-Baden, and await your decision as to when you intend to begin with me. With eight days, two hours a day, do you think that will be enough? I assume you did not choose the studio from Kopf – that would not please me, because I sat there in his shack two years ago, and my son-in-law, who had it built, subsequently had trouble with Kopf. So, we are going to Merano to enjoy a warmer climate, and will most likely stay there until we go to Baden, which will then depend on you. As soon as you can make a decision, please write to me poste restante... Clara Schumann”) On a kind of postscriptum, Clara Schumann add few lines upside down, and refers to her reheasals, stating ` Haben Sie Nachsicht mit meiner flüchtigen Schrift, aber, um mich herum wird geprobt, und dazu bin ich vom vielen Hin und Her-Denken ganz [matt] im Kopf. Meine Töchter grüßen angelegentlichst Sie Beide.´ (Translation: ” Please excuse my illegible handwriting, but rehearsals are taking place around me, and all the back-and-forth thinking has left me quite mentally exhausted. My daughters send their warmest regards to you both.”) VG
