BATTISTINI MATTIA: (1856-1928) - BATTISTINI MATTIA: (1856-1928) Italian baritone. Vintage signed postcard photograph of the singer standing in a full-length pose in costume as Werther from Jules Massenet´s four act opera Werther (1887). Signed ( ´Battistini´ ) in dark fountain pen ink by the singer to a lighter area at the head of the image and dated 1913 in his hand. Some slight traces of former mounting to the verso, G The title role of Massenet´s opera Werther was written for a tenor, however the French composer adjusted it for a baritone at Battistini´s request, so that he could perform the role in Saint Petersburg in 1902.
