[CEZANNE PAUL]: (1839-1906) A fine portrait, treasured by several generations of Cezanne´ s family - [CEZANNE PAUL]: (1839-1906) French Post-Impressionist painter. A fine vintage unsigned 4 x 6.5 photograph, the image (approximately 8.5 x 13.5 cm including borders) depicting the artist seated in a half-length pose, wearing a dark overcoat and hat, in the Forest of Fontainebleau, surrounded by trees, rocks and amidst ferns which reach up to his shoulders. Cezanne, who looks away from the camera, appears pensive and lost in his thoughts. The photograph was captured by Charles Bodmer in the summer of 1894 when the 55-year-old Cezanne was working in Barbizon before leaving in the autumn for Giverny, where he would visit his friend, the Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Lightly annotated in pencil to the verso by Cezanne´s son, Paul fils, ´Paul Cézanne par le fils de Karl Dodmer, Barbizon 1894´ , and also signed to the mount beneath the image by the artist´s grandson, Jean-Pierre Cezanne, ´ En témoignage d'amitié pour Ribault-Menekien. Jean-Pierre Cézanne´ and dated 9th June 1959 in his hand. A wonderful, rare and melancholic image which Cezanne treasured throughout his life, and then passed through two generations of his family. VG Charles Bodmer (1854-1934) was the son of Karl Bodmer (1809-1893) Swiss-born French painter, draughtsman, engraver and photographer, associated with the Barbizon School, where he lived for much of his life.
