BONIN-PISSARRO JEANNE: (1881-1948) Written three days after the death of Monet - ´ And so, little by little, the constellation of Impressionists is dwindling´ - BONIN-PISSARRO JEANNE: (1881-1948) French painter, the only daughter of Camille Pissarro to survive into adulthood. A significant A.L.S., Jeanne Bonin-Pissarro , two pages (written to the first and final sides of the bifolium), 8vo, Pontoise, 8th December 1926, to one of the stepdaughters of Claude Monet ( ´Chere Madame´ ; either Blanche Hoschedé Monet or Germaine Hoschedé Salerou, and most likely the former), in French. Bonin-Pissarro writes just three days following the death of Monet, stating ´J´ai été profondément touchée par la mort de M. Monet, elle a réveillé en moi de vieux souvenirs, de tristes aussi, et ce n´est pas sans émotion que je vois disparaître celui qui fut autrefois le compagnon de lutte de mon père et l´ami de toujours´ (Translation: ´I was deeply moved by the death of Mr Monet; it has stirred up old memories within me—some of them sad—and it is with great emotion that I see the passing of the man who was once my father’s comrade-in-arms and a lifelong friend´ ) and further remarking ´Ainsi, peu à peu, s´étient la pléiade des impressionnistes´ (Translation: ´And so, little by little, the constellation of Impressionists is dwindling´ ) before concluding by sending her deepest sympathy and asking for her condolences to be conveyed to all the members of her family. Monet passed away at his home in Giverny on Sunday, 5th December 1926, with Blanche Hoschedé at his bedside and his old friend Georges Clemenceau also in attendance. The artist´s death was front-page news in every Paris newspaper the following day, and Monet´s funeral took place on 8th December, the very day the present letter was written. Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) French Impressionist painter, a close friend of Monet from 1859. Jeanne Bonin-Pissarro, affectionately known within her family by the nickname ´Cocotte, ´ was heavily featured in her father's artwork and became an integral part of a multi-generational dynasty of artists.
