Vallotton thanks his correspondent for their kind and prompt assistance, remarking ´Je vais partir dès demain, l´etat pitoyable dans lequel je me traine y oblige´ (Translation: ´I shall be leaving tomorrow; the pitiful state I am in leaves me no choice´ ) and further adding ´Je vous enverrai avec plaisir un croquis, mais attendez mon retour, en ce moment l´effort de me trainer a mon atelier est au-dessus de mes moyens´ (Translation: ´I shall be happy to send you a sketch, but please wait until I return; at the moment, the effort required to drag myself to my studio is beyond my strength´ ). VG Gustave Kahn (1859-1936) French Symbolist poet and art critic. Vallotton famously created a woodcut portrait of Kahn in 1896 , which captured the poet's distinctive profile and was published in Le Livre des Masques by Remy de Gourmont.
