BONNARD PIERRE: (1867-1947) - BONNARD PIERRE: (1867-1947) French painter, a leading figure in the transition from Impressionism to Modernism. An illustrated A.L.S., P Bonnard , two pages, 8vo, Deauville, Calvados, 8th October n.y. (1935), to [Georges] Bouin, in French. Bonnard sends some instructions to his correspondent, ´Faites-moi donc faire un châssis de 135 sur 127 et fabriquez un cadre pour ces mesures-là - comme les derniers modèle partie plate et jonc doré - pour la teinte couleur toile écrue plutôt un peu claire´ (Translation: ´Please make me a stretcher measuring 135 by 127 and produce a frame to those dimensions – like the latest models with a flat section and gold trim – in a slightly lighter ecru shade´ ), adding that he thinks it will be suitable for the Salon d´automne and that entries must be submitted before the end of the month, further explaining that he does not have a submission form with him and asking Bouin to be good enough to complete one, ´le titre étant Salle à mager de campagne´ (Translation: ´The title is Country Dining Room´ ). Bonnard also explains that he does not know when he will come to Paris and if he is delayed will send the canvas from Deauville. At the foot of the letter Bonnard has added an ink illustration of the frame and canvas, including the dimensions, and writing alongside ´Il est convenu que quand tout sera prêt vous téléphonerez à la maison Bernheim Jeune qui enverrai un garçon. C´est elle qui portera au Salon d´automne. 127 et 135 mesures du châssis il y aura probablement un demi-centimètre de feuillure c´est assez´ (Translation: ´It is agreed that when everything is ready, you will telephone Bernheim Jeune, who will send a delivery boy. Some light age wear, and a couple of minor stains, G Georges Bouin was a highly respected Parisian encadreur (master framer) and art restorer who worked extensively with some of the most prominent avant-garde and Post-Impressionist painters of the early-to-mid 20th century. Bonnard´s Salle à manger de campagne was exhibited at the 1935 Salon d´automne.
