PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) - PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A.L.S., Picasso , one page, slim 4to, Antibes, Alpes-Maritimes, 19th August 1939, to [Max Pellequer] ( ´Mon cher ami´ ), in French. Picasso writes in bold pencil and thanks his friend for their kind letters, remarking ´ Je suis ici déjà au travail et malgré quelques sautes de pluie le temps est généralement beau comme vous le savez´ (Translation: ´I am already at work here and, despite a few showers, the weather is generally fine, as you know´ ) and continuing ´ Je vous envoi une lettre que je ai reçu. Vous allez comprendre par elle de quoi il s'agit. Faites comme vous savez que il faut agir dans ces questions, mais il faut que pour cette date cette affaire soit réglée´ (Translation: ´ I am sending you a letter that I received. You will understand from it what this is about. Do as you know you must do in such matters, but this matter must be settled by that date´ ). In a postscript to the left margin Picasso also explains that he is sending Pellequer a cheque. Some very light creasing and minor age wear and with one small, very minor split to the left edge, VG Max Pellequer (1903-1973) French banker and art collector who would become Picasso´s private banker, financial adviser and close friend. Pellequer assembled an important collection of artworks in the 1920s and 1930s which included a number of significant early pieces by Picasso, as well as works by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and others. Almost two hundred letters from Pellequer to Picasso are preserved in the Musee National Picasso in Paris. In August 1939 Picasso was living with Dora Maar in an apartment at the Palais Albert 1er in Antibes. Picasso worked intensively during this period, producing a large number of still lifes and coastal views marked by the tense, brittle atmosphere of the weeks immediately preceding the outbreak of World War II. Their stay in Antibes was brief, and when war was declared in early September 1939, Picasso and Dora Maar left the Côte d’Azur and relocated to Royan on the Atlantic coast, where Picasso remained for much of 1939–40.
