PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) & ROQUE JACQUELINE: (1926-1986) ´ and it’s true, she’s weeping; I can see her weeping´ - PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement & ROQUE JACQUELINE: (1926-1986) French model, muse and the second wife of Pablo Picasso from 1961. A moving joint A.L.S., Picasso and Jacqueline , two pages, slim oblong 8vo (approximately 20 x 8 cm), n.p., 23rd July 1960, to Max Pellequer, in French. Roque commences the letter in blue ink and states ´ Je vous remercie de vous être occupée de ”Marcelle”. Je vous retourne les papiers. Pour tout compliquer le médecin faisant la grève des paperasses il n'y a pas la ”signature du praticien”´ (Translation: ´T hank you for looking after ‘Marcelle’. I am returning the papers to you. To complicate matters, as the doctor is on a paperwork strike, there is no ‘practitioner’s signature’´ ) and further remarking ´ Je veux vous dire combien je pense à vous - et combien j'ai de peine pour vous et avec vous. Je ne puis évoquer Son souvenir sans pleurer et sans regretter amèrement son amitié qui m'était si précieuse. Je vous embrasse´ (Translation: ´ I want to tell you how much I am thinking of you – and how much I grieve for you and with you. I cannot think of her without weeping and without bitterly regretting her friendship, which was so precious to me. I send you my love´ ). Picasso continues with his own message to the verso, writing in bold red crayon, ´ ... et c'est vrai elle pleure je la vois pleurer. Je vous embrasse mon cher ami´ (Translation: ´ ... and it’s true, she’s weeping; I can see her weeping. I send you my love, my dear friend´ ), signing his name and adding the date in his hand at the conclusion. One light central vertical fold, otherwise VG Max Pellequer (1903-1973) French banker and art collector who would become Picasso´s private banker, financial adviser and close friend. Pellequer assembled an important collection of artworks in the 1920s and 1930s which included a number of significant early pieces by Picasso, as well as works by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and others. Almost two hundred letters from Pellequer to Picasso are preserved in the Musee National Picasso in Paris. Marcelle Studer is understood to have been a member of Picasso´s domestic staff at Villa La Californie in Cannes, where he moved in 1955. The subject of the weeping woman was one of fascination to Picasso. The artist created a famous series of paintings titled The Weeping Woman, the last of which was completed in late 1937. The works are closely associated with the iconography in his painting Guernica and were painted during the Spanish Civil War.
