A very fine A.L.S., Herbert , two pages, oblong 4to, Aachen, n.d., [Summer 1938], to his mother Marta Kosmac, on the printed stationery of ”Der Generalmusicdirector der Stadt Aachen”, in German. Karajan refers to several different matters, including his own health, a new car and money related to tickets, states ` Dear Mom! I can’t say anything yet because I have to wait until the doctor discharges me. That depends entirely on how I’m healing. In any case, we’ll go to Chiemsee first and then come over here. I don’t think Dad will find the new car comfortable - it’s completely open and has a pretty soft suspension, plus there’s no room for conversation. Thanks for the tickets so much - but I’m a bit confu sed about the money; after deducting the costs for Chiemsee, you surely had 130–140 marks from me. Can’t you pay for them with that, or are you still really short on cash? Please write to me soon so the tickets don’t expire.´ VG Marta Kosmac (1881-1954) mother of Herbert von Karajan. She was of Slovenian origin and was related to composer Hugo Wolf. Biographers describe Marta as a strong-willed, domineering presence in the household who cast a significant psychological shadow over her sons.
