Thanks to the prophetess Miriam, a well of water accompanied the Israelites during their 40 years of wandering in the desert. When Miriam died, this well, known as ”Miriam's Well, ” dried up, creating a water shortage. The Israelites feared dying of thirst and complained to their leaders, Moses and his brother Aaron the priest. God commanded Moses to take his staff and, together with Aaron, to gather the congregation and speak to the rock in front of the people so that it would bring forth water. However, Moses struck it twice instead of speaking to it as God had commanded, and for this Moses and Aaron were severely punished - they were sentenced to not be allowed to lead the people into the Promised Land, after their complete dedication to leading the people and coping with all the difficulties they had experienced since leaving Egypt. The reason for this punishment was as God told them: ”Because you did not believe in me to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel...” (Numbers 20:12) And so ends the tragic story for Moses. After 40 years of leading the people, in the last year before his death, Moses accused the Israelites: ”The Lord was angry with me also because of you, saying, 'You also shall not enter there'” (Deuteronomy 1:37). Because of the people, neither Moses nor Aaron could fulfill their dream and bring the Israelites into the Land of Israel.
