David and Jonathan
The 28th coin in the "Pictures from the Bible" series
Legal issue by the Bank of Israel
The story of David and Jonathan, as described in the Book of Samuel, is a story of an extraordinary friendship that goes beyond the ordinary family bond and embodies the values of loyalty, love, and mutual commitment at their peak.
Jonathan, the son of King Saul, was the designated heir to the throne, and David, a young shepherd boy, gained Jonathan's esteem and became his personal friend. However, over time, jealousy developed in Saul's heart toward David, who was considered a threat to his rule. Jonathan, despite being the king's son, chose to remain loyal to his friend.
"And you shall reign over Israel, and I will be your second, and Saul my father also knows it." (1 Samuel 23:17) Jonathan wanted David to reign after his father despite being the heir apparent and despite his father's opposition - something that was not customary and common in those days, when it was even sometimes customary to assassinate brothers in order to gain the kingdom. Jonathan recognized David's greatness, recognized his righteousness, and cultivated the bond between them.
“And Jonathan and David made a covenant, and he loved him as his own soul.” (1 Samuel 18:3) The covenant between the two was more than a simple friendship. It was a covenant of souls, a mutual promise to love, protect, and assist each other in any situation. Jonathan, despite his royal status, was not afraid to protect David from his father and gave him vital information that helped him survive the persecution of King Saul. David, for his part, proved his loyalty to Jonathan time and again, expressing his deep appreciation for his loyal friend.
After Jonathan's death on the battlefield, David laments, in which he weeps for Saul and Jonathan, and says: "I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan, you have been very pleasant to me; your love to me is wonderful, passing the love of women" (2 Samuel 1:26).
The story of David and Jonathan is a story of true friendship, of loyalty that knows no bounds, and of the deepest human bonds. It resonates through generations and inspires to this day. The covenant between David and Jonathan is a role model and reminds us of the importance of deep interpersonal relationships based on trust and mutual respect.
