”Azkara Le'Kedoshei Yisrael” (Memorial for the Victims of Holocaust) - a Large Poster of a Handwritten Prayer - Early Version - the 1950's - The prayer of ”El Maleh Rachamim”, written in nice handwriting on a poster meant for hanging in a synagogue. Written by Moshe Aharon Rubenstein. Above the writing, a star-of-David with the word ”Israel” inside it and an illustration of two yahrzeit candles on both its sides. A black frame is drawn around the prayer. This prayer describes in detail the death of the Jews during the Holocaust ”who were killed, slaughtered, strangled, drowned, burned, and buried alive in the countries of the Nazi occupation”. Then there is a long list of countries where Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. The version that appears in this poster is very early. It is similar to the version written by the Chief Rabbinate during the Holocaust. This version was changed in the 1960's due to a widespread public polemic spurred by President Yitzchak Ben Zvi. The version today is shorter and contains many changes compared with this one. Among others, the number ”six million” is mentioned, as opposed to the version of the poster, which notes ”thousands of thousands of Jewish souls”. Horrifying and rare. 88x38 cm. Condition: Good-Very Good. Few tears and slight damage to the frame. The head of the frame is slightly detached.
