La'Kdoshim asher Ba'Aretz - Jerusalem, 1934 - Long, Handwritten Dedication by the Author - The book ”La'Kdoshim Asher Ba'Aretz”, part one – histories, books and tombstone wording of the sages and great Rabbis of Aleppo who immigrated to Jerusalem and died there, and the tombstone wording of the martyrs of the 1929 riots in Hebron. By Rabbi Ben Zion Laniado. On the page before the title page is a long dedication in the author's handwriting and with his signature, to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Yaluz, the Rabbi of Tiberius. This book was printed in three parts: the printing began in 1934, and ended in 1952. The book has two title pages (part one and part three). The title page of the third section was printed in 1935, however the title page of the first part was printed in 1952 and added to the book. In the copy before us the first title page is missing, and there are corrections on a number of leaves. The hypothesis is that the author sent the book to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Yaluz before the printing was completed. Rabbi Ben Zion David Laniado (1900-1970) was born in Aleppo, and immigrated to Jerusalem at the age of 18. He moved to live in the city of Hebron a few months before the 1929 massacre. On Friday August 23 1929, when he went to pray at the graves of the forefathers, as was his custom, he encountered a group of Arab rioters who planned to kill him. Just then the great Sheikh passed by them, and when he saw what was happening shouted to them: ”Leave him alone, because he is the sage of the Jews”. In memory of his salvation, he arranged, together with his friend Rabbi Yitzchak Alfia, to recite the entire book of Tehillim three times a day with no break and without saying a single un-holy word.
