Long Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Yehuda Leib Segal Av Beit Din of Makó, to the Dayanim of Obuda Headed by Rabbi Moshe Mintz - 1801  - A long polemic letter regarding the matter of the appeals against a rabbi who held on to the estate of the widow Mrs. Gittel. The letter opens with praise of Rabbi Moshe Mintz Av Beit Din of Obuda and addresses all the Dayanim of the town and the well-known Naggid Rabbi Gershon Beskowitz. In the letter, the rabbi describes at length the events concerning the widow and the deceased, who died with no children and bequeathed their estate to Rabbi Lirsch. He rightfully held on to their estate and any appeal is due to lack of knowledge. Rabbi Yehuda Leib Segal (died in 1824) taught Torah to the Obuda community at the house of the Naggid Rabbi Avraham Gimpel. In 1778 he became a Maggid Mehsarim, Darshan and Moreh Tzedek of the Makó community. In 1781, at the request of the community, he became its rabbi and Av Beit Din. He served in the positions for forty eight years, until his death. He is mentioned in the ”Noda Be'Yehuda” Responsa Yoreh De'ah Siman 138 in a response sent to him by the ”Noda Be'Yehuda”. He is also mentioned in the book ”Parashat Mordechai” by Rabbi Mordechai Bennet. He left manuscripts of halachic responsa. He stood beside Rabbi Yitzchak Grishaber, the disciple of the ”Noda Be'Yehuda”, in his war against Aharon Chorin, who was a pioneer of early religious reform. Interesting letter! His handwriting is extremely rare! Rabbi Moshe Mintz (1750-1831), Av beit Din of Obuda, one of the most prominent rabbis of Hungary, an in-law of the ”Chatam Sofer”. Headed the yeshiva, Beit Din Tzedek and synagogue of Obuda. Authored the books ”Pri Ya'akov” on the Sugiyot of the Talmud and ”Devir Ha'Bayit” a sermon calling to build the synagogue of Obuda. 24.5 cm. Large leaf folded into two, written on a a page and a half. Condition: Very Good. Nice, orderly script. Thick, high-quality leaf. Folding marks.
