Letter by Rabbi Shemaryahu Yosef Karelitz Av Beit Din of Kosava and his Wife, the Rebbetzen Rasha Leah, the Parents of the ”Chazon Ish” - Kosava, 1905 - A postcard addressed to their eldest son, Rabbi Meir Karelitz, the brother of the ”Chazon Ish”. The first part of the letter is handwritten in Hebrew by Rabbi Shemaryahu Karelitz, with two signatures; the second part is handwritten and signed in Yiddish by his wife, the Rebbetzen Rasha Leah. Rabbi Karelitz's letter is about a Shiduch from Vilnius. In his letter, he refers to the words of his son, the ”Chazon Ish”, on this matter. At the end of the letter, after his first signature ”Shemaryosef”, he sends his regards to his in-law (Rabbi Shlomo Ha'Cohen of Vilnius, the author of ”Cheshek Shlomo”, the father-in-law of Rabbi Meir Karelitz) and his son (Rabbi Avraham Ya'akov Ha'Cohen), and again signs his name: ”Shemaryosef”. As said, the second part is handwritten and signed in Yiddish by the Rebbetzen Rasha Leah. After her signature, she added four additional lines. On the reverse side of the postcard, a name and address in a foreign language. Rabbi Shemaryahu Karelitz (1852-1916), author of ”Beit Talmud” and ”Givat Shaul”. At the age of thirty he became Av Beit Din and head of the Kosava Yeshiva. He served in the role for thirty years. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Shaul Katzenelbogen Av Beit Din of Kobryn. He used to answer the halachic questions asked by the Jews of the area, yet in his modesty, always added that ”in practice, Gedolei Ha'Dor should be asked on the matter”. His wife, the Rebbetzen Rasha Leah, immigrated to the Land of Israel in the 1930's. she was known for her modesty and piousness. All their nine sons and sons-in-law were illustarious, well-known rabbis. Postmarked postcard, written on one side. 14 cm. Condition: Good-Fair. Wrinkles and stains.
