Torah Novellae Handwritten by the Rebbe, Rabbi Mordechai Dov of Hornosteipel, the Son-in-Law of the ”Divrei Chaim” of Sanz - Two leaves of Torah Novellae handwritten by the Rebbe of Honosteipel. Leaves in the Rebbe's handwriting are extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, they have never been seen in auctions! Before us is a manuscript from his important compositions on the laws of interest. The Rebbe, Rabbi Mordechai Dov Twersky (1840-1903), the son of Rabbi Meshalam Zusha of Anipoli and the son-in-law of the ”Divrei Chaim” of Sanz. His mother died when he was young and he grew up in the house of his maternal grandfather, the Rebbe Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael Twerski. He was a descendant of th eRebbes of Chabad and Chernobyl. He was a genius in Halacha and kabbala. In 1863, he was appointed by his grandfather as Rebbe and Rabbi of Hornosteipel and thousands of Hassidim started to flow to him. In 1876, after his grandfather's death, even more Hassidim came to his Beit Midrash and he became known as one of the most prominent Rebbes of Russia. One of the well-known Hornosteipel Hassidim was the Kanievsky family. Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Kanievsky (the ”Steipler”) was born in 1899 after his parents married according to the advice and with the blessing of the Rebbe. The ”Steipler” grew up among the Hassidim and was connected to the Torah of the Rebbe all his life. The Rebbe was also known as a Posek who corresponded with the most prominent rabbis of his country and of other countries (the Maharil Diskin, Rabbi Chaim Berlin and more). Among his books: ”Torei Zahav” on the laws of interest (part of which appears in the manuscript before us), ”Emek She'elah” Responsa, ”Emek Ha'Chochma - Halachic and Hassidic Drush, ”Kad Ha'Zahav” - kabbalist issues (a manuscript that has been lost and has not been printed).
