Original Charcoal Painting - Huge Portrait of Menachem Begin - Signed - [the 1950's?] - Most Impressive, Unusual! - Beautiful, artistic painting. Signed: ”Leon”[?]. We do not know the identity of the painter. It might be Leon Engelsberg. At the left bottom side of the painting, a handwritten dedication: ”As a keepsake with love and admiration Binyamin Leis”. Menachem Begin, one of the most outstanding figures of his generation, the commander of the Irgun (Etzel), the leader of the revolt against the British mandatory government, the sixth prime minister of the State of Israel. He was a simple and modest person, his funeral reflecting the way he had lived: in accordance with his wishes, Begin was given a simple Jewish burial ceremony and buried on the Mount of Olives in the Jewish Cemetery there. He had asked to be buried there instead of Mount Herzl, where most Israeli leaders are laid to rest, because he wanted to be buried beside his wife Aliza, as well as Meir Feinstein of the Irgun and Moshe Barazani of Lechi, who committed suicide in jail while awaiting execution by the British.
