Gold pendant (14 ct) with original bronze prutah of Pontius Pilate, 26-36 C.E.
Pontius Pilate is the best known of the Roman procurators of Jerusalem, since he was the one who apprehended Jesus and ordered his crucifixion. Whereas the coins of the previous governors depicted vegetal symbols compatible with Jewish religious sensitivities his coins depict two pagan symbols, the lituus, an augur’s wand, and the simpulum a ladle.

Size: 2.5 X 1.8 centimeter approximately.
Total weight (the pendant and the coin): 4.1 grams approximately.

A bronze prutah of Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea under Tiberius.
Obv: Lituus (divining rod) surrounded by Greek inscription TIBEPIOY KAICAPOC ('of Tiberius Caesar').
