The title “VUE DU PORTIQUE DU NORD” translates as “View of the Northern Portico” and refers to the architectural motif depicted. The inscription “Augle (Auguste) de Montferrand del.” contains the conventional abbreviation ”del.” (”delineavit” — “drawn by”) and attests that the original drawing was executed by Auguste de Montferrand (1786–1858), a French architect who worked in Saint Petersburg and is particularly renowned for the design of St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Alexander Column. The formula “Lith. par Benoist” means “lithographed by Benoist, ” indicating that the image was transferred onto a lithographic stone and executed in the lithographic technique by the lithographer Benoist.
