Yakov Dmitrievich Andreev (1871–1915) *After Rembrandt*. 1898. Paper, etching, 27 × 20 cm (sheet), 8 × 6.8 cm. Along the lower edge of the sheet, in the lower right corner, there is the artist’s signature and date in graphite pencil: “Ya. Andreev / 98”. In the lower left corner beneath the image, there is an author’s inscription in graphite pencil: “After Rembrandt”. - An engraver and graphic artist. From 1887 to 1893 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, in the class of battle painting. In 1891 and 1892 he was awarded encouragement medals. In 1893 he received the title of Free Artist. In 1898–1899, as an auditor, he attended classes at the Higher Art School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied engraving under the guidance of V. V. Mate. He worked primarily as a portrait engraver; in the 1900s he produced engraved portraits of B. P. Villevalde, P. K. Klodt, F. I. Pryanishnikov, N. I. Utkin, P. I. Tchaikovsky, P. P. Chistyakov, and T. G. Shevchenko, as well as compositions such as *Transporting the Millstone*, *Departure for War*, and many others. In 1911 his works were exhibited at the World Exhibition in Rome. From 1906 he served as an inspector at the Drawing School affiliated with the Higher Art School. In 1911 he was awarded the title of Academician.
