Solomko Sergey Sergeevich ”The Prince and the Slave girl”. An illustration for a fairy tale. 1900-1910's. Paper, watercolor, whitewash. 26x12 cm. The work comes from the collection of Georgian Princess Nina Mdivani, who commissioned these illustrations from S.S. Solomko. Expert opinion of Silaev V.S. - Illustration by Sergey Sergeevich Solomko— one of the most recognizable masters of book and magazine graphics of the early twentieth century, who worked subtly with historical costume, decorative line and theatrical composition. The plot of ”The Prince and the Slave Girl” is revealed as a scenic action: the elongated vertical format enhances the feeling of the ”frame” and emphasizes the elegance of silhouettes, and watercolor painting is complemented by whitewash, creating shimmering accents on clothes and details of the image. The work belongs to a series of illustrations to a fabulous plot and demonstrates the aesthetics of the Art Nouveau era characteristic of Solomko: refinement of drawing, attention to ornament, plastic postures and expressiveness of gesture.
