Dubovsky Nikolai Nikanorovich 1859-1918. ”Winter in the village”. The year is 1917. Oil on canvas; 54x71.5 cm. At the bottom right of the canvas is the date, signed by N.Dubovskaya 1917 and the expert opinion of S.V.Rimskaya-Korsakova, E.V.Nesterova and A.Y.Bogdanov. - The late landscape by Nikolai Nikanorovich Dubovsky, one of the greatest masters of the Russian lyrical school of the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. In the 1917 work, the artist refers to the ”quiet” motif of the winter village, revealing it as a state of nature: frosty air, diffused light and shimmering snow cover are conveyed in a free, picturesque manner and subtle tonal tints. The composition is based on the deep perspective of a village road leading to houses under the snow; small figures enliven the space and enhance the sense of scale and silence. The piece has a wholeness of color and Dubovsky's characteristic ability to combine the concreteness of a motif with poetic generalization. Biographical information: Nikolai Nikanorovich Dubovsky (1859-1918) was a painter and landscape painter. He was born in the village of Novocherkasskaya, in the family of a military sergeant of the Donskoy Army Region. In 1877, as a scholarship holder of the Donskoy Army, he entered the landscape class of the Imperial Academy of Arts (to Professor M.K. Klodt). In 1882, he left the Academy without completing his course. In 1892, he received a certificate for the right to teach drawing in secondary schools, and in 1898, he was awarded the title of Academician of landscape painting ”for his fame in the artistic field.” Since 1911, he has been a professor and head of the landscape workshop at the Higher Art School. He lived in St. Petersburg. I traveled a lot. Visited Italy (1892, 1895, 1897, 1898), Greece (1892, 1894), Turkey (1893), Switzerland (1895, 1897, 1903, 1908), France (Brittany, 1898), Germany (1912). Member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (since 1886), member of the Council and Board of the TPHV (since 1895), member of the Association of South Russian Artists (since 1894), full member of the Kuindzhi Society (since 1910), participant in a number of national and international exhibitions. His works are represented in the largest museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Museum of Fine Arts, and the artist bequeathed a large number of his works to his hometown of Novocherkassk.
