Gerasimov Sergey Vasilyevich (1885-1964) ”Acropolis”, paper, pencil, 16 x 27 cm. - The laconic pencil sheet ”Acropolis” refers to the graphic works of Sergei Gerasimov, in which his ability to ”grasp” space with several precise lines is especially clearly manifested. In a small horizontal format, the artist conveys the silhouette of ancient architecture as a clear structure: the rhythm of columns, stepped planes and an accentuated horizon line. The pencil technique here works as an observation tool: light shading outlines volumes and an airy perspective, leaving the image transparent and alive. The impression is based not on detail, but on the precision of proportions and the feeling of light, so that the view is perceived both as a travel study and as an integral artistic image that conveys the majestic calm ”plasticity” of the Acropolis. Gerasimov Sergey Vasilyevich is a painter, graphic artist. He studied at the Central School of Economics under K.A. Korovin, then at his college. He participated in the associations ”Moscow Salon” (1911-1920), ”World of Art” (1920), ”Makovets” (1921-1922), OMH (1926-1929), AHR (1930-1932). Professor at TSSHPU (since 1950). People's Artist of the USSR. Full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
