Alexander Lozovoy, ”A village in Catalonia. Basque girls” monotype, collage, 2010. 65.7 x 63.5 cm. - Alexander Lozovoy's work ”A village in Catalonia. Basque Girls” (2010) is a vivid example of the author's expressive manner, in which the spontaneity of the monotype is combined with the precise composition of the collage. The image is based on the collision of color planes and textures: the free, ”breathing” prints of the monotype provide a picturesque environment, and the collage inclusions gather it into a rhythm, enhancing the decorativeness and tension of the form. The plot here is more of an excuse for plastic expression. The architectural motifs of the Catalan village and the figures of the girls are read as signs of culture and space.: they arise from a layer of paint and paper, then appearing, then dissolving into color, creating a feeling of hot southern air, movement and inner music of the composition. The sheet sounds both like an impression of a journey and as an independent play of form — energetic, modern, built on impulse and a precise sense of balance. Alexander Lozovoy's teacher was Varvara Bubnova (1886-1983), a member of the Youth Union, the Jack of Diamonds, Donkey's Tail and INHOOK, who worked and exhibited with P. Filonov, V. Tatlin, V. Kandinsky, A. Rodchenko. The artist's father, Nikolai Lozovoy (1901-1992), studied with Kazimir Malevich and Pavel Filonov in the 1920s. To date, Alexander Lozovoy is the only one who has directly studied with Russian avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century. The artist has developed his fundamentally new expressive technique, in particular, the technique of monotype. The artist's works are kept in the State Museum of Fine Arts, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, MMSI, as well as in other domestic and foreign museum collections.
