The woman in the picture is Sei Shonagon (ca. 966 to ca.1025). She was a famous singer and writer in the Heian period, one of the ”thirty-six immortal songs of the Middle Ages” and a former official of Empress Fujiwara Tingko of Emperor Ichijo.
