Artist: Hiroshige ANDO (1797-1858), from the series: ”Tokaido-Gojusan tsugi no uchi” (The 53 Stations of Tokaido) (c.1850-1851). Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo, 1850. 3 sheets, sheet no.: 17, 30, 31. Sheet size: ca. 23,5 x 17,8 cm, glued on paper. Condition: Browned, loss of color, some sheets with wormholes, corner damaged. 'Kichizo': Great boat scene by Hiroshige. This is one of the very popular prints from this series. 'Yui': The scene in the village of Yui. 'Shirasuka': The hillside with sea view in Shirasuka. The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido in the Hoeido edition (1833-1834) are a series created by Utagawa Hiroshige after his first journey along the Tokaido in 1832. The Hoeido edition of the Tokaido is Hiroshige's best-known work and the best-selling ukiyo-e prints in Japan. It was published shortly after Hokusai's series ”Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” and established this new main theme of ukiyo-e: the landscape print or fukei-ga with a special focus on ”famous views”.
