Baselitz initially completed his art studies in East Berlin, but was expelled from the university in 1956. From 1958 he lived and studied in West Berlin. In 1961, he published the 1st Pandemonic Manifesto, in which he criticized the prevailing concept of art. In 1963, two of his paintings were confiscated for immorality. In 1969, he created the first paintings with a reversed motif, which made Baselitz famous worldwide and had a decisive influence on painting after 1960. In 2004, Baselitz was honored with the Praemium Imperiale of the Japan Art Association. His works are represented in numerous international museums and collections.
