Dahmen attended the art school in Aachen. After it closed in 1933, he completed an apprenticeship as a commercial artist. Through his close contacts with the Ecole de Paris, he came to Informel and became one of the most important German representatives of this movement. He took part in Documenta II in 1959. Dahmen is also known for his collages, in which he integrated everyday objects (material pictures). In 1967 he became a professor at the Munich Art Academy.
