Overlaid with brown glass. Etched decoration of branches with pine cones. Etched butterfly above the signature. Signed: D ' Argental with Lorraine Cross (high-etched). Ground-out pontil mark. H. 23.5 cm. Paul Nicolas (1875-1952) was a French glass designer, glassmaker, and painter. After studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, Paul Nicolas joined Émile Gallé's glass manufactory as a glass designer in 1893, where he worked under the direction of Louis Hestaux. Here he received training as a glassmaker. Thanks to his knowledge of botany, he was often responsible for creating motifs with floral compositions in the Art Nouveau style. Some of the vases presented by Gallé at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition resulted from close collaboration with Nicolas. After Gallé's death in 1904, Nicolas initially continued the company. At the end of the First World War, Nicolas left the Gallé company and, together with Paul Mercier, Eugène Windeck and Émile Villermaux, founded the partnership Graveurs Réunis. (Wikipedia)
