Significant Buddha Head in Stone - Significant Buddha Head in Stone China, probably Qi Dynasty or later. Stone. H. approx. 34 cm. Carving of Buddha's head. Condition: Over time, the black and golden pigments have almost faded. Probably Qi Dynasty (550-577 CE) or later. The object shows clear signs of aging and dirt. With a beautiful remnant of dark pigmentation in the hair and remaining gilding on the face. The face shows the influence of Chinese artists on Buddhist iconography. The Buddha's face is depicted as broad, divided by a narrow nose that descends from elegantly curved eyebrows. A small, full-lipped mouth is located above the dimpled chin. The eyes are large, with heavy lids and lowered. The ears are also large, with a spiral shape at the top and elongated earlobes, referring to the wealth of Prince Siddhartha before his enlightenment. The head is gently conical and covered with densely packed relief dots to give the impression of tightly curled hair.
