A Jizhou ''Papercut Prunus'' Bowl - A Jizhou ''Papercut Prunus'' Bowl China, Song Dynasty or later. Ceramic, glazed. Inside with beautiful brown, orange, and yellow glaze. H. 5.8 cm. D. of mouth: 17.8 cm. Provenance: Private collection from Western Europe. Condition: Signs of age and use, no chips. Two small glaze imperfections on the inside. The interior shows the floral motif in dark brown against a speckled beige and brown background. The exterior is covered with a rich dark brown glaze. The Jizhou ''Papercut Prunus” bowl is an impressive example of ceramic art from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), originating from the Jizhou kilns in Jiangxi Province, China. These bowls are known for their innovative decoration technique and elegant design. The decoration was achieved using papercut stencils. Artisans placed cut-out paper motifs - often plum blossoms - on the bowl before applying a dark glaze. The paper resisted the glaze, so the motif remained visible in lighter tones after firing.
