Large Brazier from Jade Buddha Temple (Yù Fó Chán Sì) - Large brazier from Jade Buddha Temple (Yù Fó Chán Sì) China, late 19th century to early 20th century. Bronze, patinated. H. approx. 30 cm. D. of mouth: 49 cm. Weight: 14.8 kg. Signs of age and wear. On the body, on both display sides of the bowl, there are four Chinese characters in relief: Jade Buddha Temple (Yù Fó Chán Sì). Three pairs of monkeys hang on the edge of the bowl and look inside. Under each pair, a baby monkey hangs from their feet. The Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai, China, was founded in 1882 by Monk Huigen from Mount Putuo. It owes its name to two jade Buddhas brought from Myanmar. In 1918, the temple was rebuilt by Abbot Kecheng at its current location and renamed 'Jade Buddha Chan Temple'. Despite wartime turmoil and the Cultural Revolution, the jade Buddhas remained unharmed. Since its reopening in 1978, the temple has been considered an important symbol of Buddhist culture in Shanghai.
