An old Japanese metal Yatate with lacquer decoration and mother-of-pearl inlays - An old Japanese metal yatate with lacquer decoration and mother-of-pearl inlays Japan, probably Meiji period (1868 - 1912). Metal, black lacquered with mother-of-pearl inlays. L. 20 cm. Condition: Signs of age and wear, lacquer partly worn. The container probably still contains dried cotton with ink residues. The brush is not included. A yatate (literally: quiver) is a Japanese travel writing set, mainly in use since the Middle Ages. At first glance it resembles a tobacco pipe and consists of a case with a brush and a small container for ink (sumi tsubo), in which silk or cotton is located to absorb the ink.
