Ackermann studied at the art school in Weimar in 1906 under Henry van de Velde, in Dresden in 1908 in Richard Müller's drawing class, and then from 1909 in Munich under Franz von Stuck at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1912, he moved to Stuttgart, where he joined the circle of students of Adolf Hölzel at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, whose theories greatly impressed him.
