Alt studied art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin from 1960. In 1965, he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Schütze in Bad Godesberg. In 1969, his first sculptures were created. Since the mid-1960s, Alt has gained attention for his so-called 'puzzle pictures'. He also works for the theater and is active as a designer and graphic artist. In 2006, Alt was involved in a major art campaign for the application of the city of Essen and the Ruhr area to become European Capital of Culture 2010.
