Bargheer studied until 1918 at the Hamburg-Lerchenfeld School of Applied Arts and became a member of the Hamburg Secession in 1929. In 1939, Bargheer moved to Italy and stylistically turned to abstraction. In 1955 and 1959, he participated in the I and II Documenta. In 1963, he became a professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
