Signed and dated lower right: Hubert Berke (19)61. Framed under glass. Traces of adhesive tape. Berke began his painting studies in the early 1930s with Fritz Burmann at the Art Academy in Königsberg. In 1933, he transferred to the Düsseldorf Art Academy and became a student of Paul Klee. After the war, Berke engaged with the abstract painting of Informel and became known for it. In addition to his paintings, he created the well-known nail pictures, objects, machines, stained glass windows, mosaics, and tapestries since 1955. From 1960, he held a professorship for ”Freehand Drawing and Watercolor Painting” at the Rhenish-Westphalian Technical University Aachen.
