Signed lower right: Dorazio (19)60. Framed under glass. Dorazio studied architecture in Rome from 1945. At the same time, his first abstract works emerged. In 1947 he received a scholarship for the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There he came into contact with modern artists. A stay in the USA enabled him to make the acquaintance of leading figures of Abstract Expressionism, such as Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and Barnett Newman. In 1959 he participated in Documenta II in Kassel. He held a lectureship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dorazio founded the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1963 and was appointed professor in 1968. This painting dates from the 1960s, a period when Dorazio created the first compositions built from color bands in his New York studio, which would shape his work from then on. He is considered one of the leading Italian artists of concrete color painting.
