Jade Thumb Ring and Jade Cicada Pendant - Jade Thumb Ring and Jade Cicada Pendant China, probably Qing Dynasty or earlier (1644 - 1912). Jade, probably Hetian jade. Thumb ring dimensions: W. 2.5 cm. D. 3.5 cm. Inner D. 2.2 cm. Cicada pendant dimensions: approx. 4.6 x 3 x 1 cm. The thumb ring has a classic cylindrical shape, relatively thick-walled. Condition: Signs of age. A very small chip on the rim of the ring. Chinese jade thumb ring (in Chinese: banzhi) is a fascinating object that is far more than just jewelry. It combines craftsmanship, status symbolism, and cultural history. Originated in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Originally, archers wore such rings to protect the thumb when drawing the bowstring. The cicada (chán) is one of the oldest symbols of good luck in China. It stands for: immortality and rebirth; purity and moral integrity; youthfulness and vitality. The first depictions are found in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). A jade cicada was placed on the tongue of the deceased to ensure their rebirth.
