Eglau studied at the Berlin University of Arts, among others, with Max Kaus. At the TU Berlin, Eglau held a professorship for free painting and drawing. In 1957, he received the prize of the 1st Exposition Biennale Internationale De Gravure à Tokyo. He undertook numerous study trips worldwide, but maintained permanent studios in Berlin and on Sylt.
